Overton Brooks VA Medical Center
The Overton Brooks VA Medical Center (VAMC) is a 119 bed hospital located at 510 East Stoner Avenue in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Medical Center serves a population of over 139,000 Veterans in 15 counties in northeast Texas, five counties in southwestern Arkansas and 12 parishes in northern Louisiana. In addition to the affiliation with LSU Health Science Center - Shreveport, active duty military personnel are also treated at Overton Brooks VAMC through a sharing agreement with the 2d Medical Group at Barksdale Air Force Base located in Bossier City, Louisiana.
Four core rotations for residents are offered. The first is the 18 bed secure psychiatric unit is managed by a dedicated team consisting of an attending psychiatrist, resident, psychiatric social worker and a charge nurse. Additional personnel routinely included in treatment plans are an occupational therapist, clinical psychologist, and chaplain as well as staff nurses and nurses’ aides.
The second core rotation is the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder specialty program staffed by two attending psychiatrists, one resident, one clinical psychologist, one Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a readjustment counselor.
The Telepsychiatry program is the third rotation offered. Residents serve with an attending psychiatrist using videoconferencing technology to evaluate and treat patients at the Medical Center’s three Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Longview, Texas, Texarkana, Arkansas, and Monroe, Louisiana.
The fourth core rotation offered at the medical center is the Drug Dependency Treatment Program. The resident serves with an attending psychiatrist, Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Psychiatric Social Workers (Licensed Clinical Social Workers) and Professional Counselors to care for Veterans in an intense 28-day outpatient treatment program. A buprenorphine treatment program for opiate addiction is being developed.
